Hot Oil Treatments For Dry Hair

por Vicki Toledo (2019-08-29)

Dry hair makes styling difficult. You get frizz, tangles, flyaways and spend most of your time yearning for that glossy, smooth hair that you see in all the shampoo adverts. Well, there's absolutely no reason you can't greatly improve your hair's condition with a bit of time and care. If you want to inject some moisture into dry, brittle hair, a homemade hot oil treatment is sure to help you on your way.

Hot oil treatments are one of the best known remedies for dry hair, and for good reason. You can buy these in small tubes or packets from your local pharmacy or supermarket, as many haircare ranges offer them. That's fine, and they work well, especially if you choose an Argan oil treatment. However, you can also do them at home for a lot less money, and the added bonus is that you can customise the treatment to suit your personal needs.

Any natural oil is a good choice, so coconut, avocado, grapeseed, olive, almond and jojoba oil are all on our list of go-to's. Avoid sunflower oil, though! They'll all do a fairly similar job, with slight differences, so if you have a very specific hair type, then do a quick internet search to determine the best type. As a basic guide, coconut oil is suitable for almost all hair types. Jojoba oil is a great choice if your hair is naturally oily or thin, castor oil is great for adding strength to hair prone to breakage, and avocado is the best for those with very frizzy hair remedy at home or dry hair.

Don't worry too much if this is your first hot oil treatment. No need to rush to the shops for jojoba oil! You'll be washing it off by the morning anyway, so whatever oil you have on hand will be ok and will do the trick.

To add a pleasant scent and even more benefits, you can use a few drops of essential oil or herbs mixed in with your hair oil, but it isn't 100% necessary. Lavender, chamomile and aloe are all good choices to add moisture, whereas peppermint and sage will help to stimulate hair growth.

All you have to do is heat the oil (with the herbs, if you're using them fresh) until it gets warm, then slather it on your hair and massage into your scalp using your fingertips. Cover with a shower cap and a warm towel to keep the heat in, allowing the oil to penetrate into your hair. Leave it on for at least thirty minutes, but overnight is preferable. In the morning, wash it off with warm water and remember to always use a good moisturising shampoo and conditioner!
