MANAGEMENT OF HYPOGLYCEMIA: SISTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Most cases of hypoglycemia in intensive care environments affects patients with diabetes. The diabetic patients are frequently hypoglycemic episodes during insulin therapy, which hinder the achievement of optimal glycemic control. Thus, the critical care nurse is responsible for maintaining tight glycemic control, achieving levels that would ensure the therapeutic benefit and with a low incidence of hypoglycemia. This study was conducted through computerized literature search in electronic databases. Given the above, this research seeks to answer the clinical question flaming: On account of high complexity, which is the effective management of hypoglycemia in the treatment of diabetes mellitus? Were selected as data source 10 articles in journals of national and international nurses that met the inclusion criteria of this study. According to the results and summary of the principal evidence, are exposed implications for nurses, as well as for nursing staff which serves the critical patient. To maintain a safe and effective glycemic control, the nurse should implement nursing care based on evidence from monitoring of blood glucose as a priority for diabetic care, especially the one in use of IV insulin infusion. One should keep the nursing staff well trained on the least signs of hypoglycemia.
