Guidelines for evidence-based practice on nursing prescription enteral feeding in ICU: integrative literature review

Janaina Rosa Lourenço da Silva, Isabel Cristina Fonseca da Cruz

Abstract

Enteral feeding is the strategy most commonly used to prevent or treat malnutrition by insufficient oral intake and / or increased caloric-protein requirements. It has been used in patients with partial or total inability to maintain the oral route as a feeding route. Objective: identify the scientific production of nursing using the PICO strategy to determine the best evidence available for the care of the Adult / Elderly client of high complexity in relation to Enteral Feeding. Methodology: This is an integrative review (IR) of the scientific literature in the databases of the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and SCIELO, from 2011 to 2017, which includes the analysis of relevant research that supports the and clinical practice improvement, for which 10 articles were selected. Outcome: Enteral Nutrition should still be considered the first-choice nutritional therapy in critically ill patients, because it presents less risk of complications. Good supply management is important, and minimize interruptions, so it does not compromise patients' caloric support. Conclusion: The nurse can be a key part of the care when guaranteeing the effectiveness of the nursing interventions performed in the nutritional therapy. Based on the evidence presented, a clinical protocol was developed to better manage this practice.
