What is the best digital technology for monitoring blood glucose in the ICU? - Systematized Literature Review

Amanda M Lima, Isabel F Cruz

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to search the professional scientific literature for digital technologies, their characteristics and their purpose of use which can optimize blood glucose monitoring (ICNP ® code: 10032034), as well as have a positive impact on therapeutic results of the high complexity patient. Methods: This is an integrative literature review study through an online database search, in the period from 2013 to 2021, in which a survey of scientific production was carried out using descriptors according to the PICOT strategy. Results: The results reveal 10 publications identified and analyzed using the thematic analysis technique. Digital technologies were evidenced to improve the nursing diagnosis: Unstable Blood Glucose Risk with a focus on blood glucose monitoring. Conclusion: It is concluded that In high complexity patients, real-time continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) may be the best way to reduce fluctuations in blood glucose levels and minimize a consistent increase in the rate of severe hypoglycemia and to increase efficacy and the safety of strict glucose control.
