Implications of nursing intervention Management of cerebral edema in patients after stroke: Systematized Review of Literature

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Cerebral edema is a complication of stroke that can develop by the hour and peaks within 2 to 5 days of injury and can lead to severe neurological deterioration and even brain death due to decreased perfusion in brain tissue. The objective of this study was to find the best evidence about the nursing intervention in cerebral edema in patients after stroke. It is a computerized integrative review carried out in the databases of the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and PubMed in the period 2011 to 2017. We selected selected 10 articles in relation to the strength of evidence and clinical relevance. Considering that ischemic stroke is mainly responsible for the formation of cerebral edema, it is concluded that the neurological monitoring of this patient should be strict, mainly in the first 24 hours and between 2-5 days of the stroke. The clinical, invasive and noninvasive, and noninvasive hemodynamic evaluation of patients with stroke is important for a rigorously monitored neurological course of cerebral edema and to define the appropriate nursing intervention to be implemented.
